St. George's

As your floating residence sidles into the postcard-perfect harbor of St. George's-a port city so charmingly Caribbean it practically demands a steel drum soundtrack-you might briefly entertain the thought, "Oh good, another idyllic tropical haven; how original." But resist the impulse to underestimate Grenada. This spicy little island (which, incidentally, exports enough nutmeg to give everyone on Earth at least one mildly hallucinatory eggnog), packs more punch into a few lush square miles than seems entirely fair. Between its pastel-coloured colonial buildings, labyrinthine markets, and fortresses politely reminding you of centuries of cannon fire, St. George's effortlessly serves history with a side of sass. For best results, shake off your sea legs with a guided romp through the rainforest, indulge shamelessly in a steaming bowl of oil down-the island's hearty, coconut-infused national dish-and lose an afternoon chatting up vendors about secret spice blends at the town market. After all, you have two to five days to conquer the Spice Isle-why waste a minute on anything bland?

Bobbing atop the turquoise waters of Moliniere Bay, snorkel mask askew and fins awkwardly flapping, you'll find yourself staring down at the eerily beautiful spectacle that is the world's first underwater sculpture park-equal parts Atlantis, art gallery, and marine sanctuary. Artist Jason deCaires Taylor brilliantly defies logic, blending environmental consciousness with a distinctly surreal sense of humor-imagine swimming lazily past stone figures frozen in perpetual contemplation, sea fans waving gently around their silent, stoic faces. Dive in early, preferably before 10 a.m., when the Caribbean sun pours through crystal-clear waters, illuminating the statues in hauntingly photographic clarity and also mercifully before the selfie-stick-wielding hordes descend. Plan ahead at least a couple days to book a decent tour or rent snorkeling gear for about 40 bucks; pack a waterproof camera, reef-safe sunscreen, and your curiosity-or a healthy sense of existential irony. Even if your buoyancy control is questionable, your underwater selfies blurry, and your mask keeps fogging up-swimming among statues reclaimed by coral, where modern art meets marine life conservation, makes for one hell of a good bar story, if nothing else.
